I, for one, find the general layout of this site extremely readable, *because of* the border and the wide margins �it puts the emphasis on the content �especially with the sand-colored background� in a way that a white page with an implicit margin does not.
What this layout does is what borders in general (as in, between countries) do: it contains. In our case, it is the eye that is contained.
