I would very much like to know if the movies can be edited in iMovie 08 out of the box.

I tried AVCHD based video cam from Canon and I had to buy 3rd party software to convert the AVCHD into Apple Intermediate format.
It takes a looong time to do the conversion -- totally kills the spontaneity of this kind of small flash based video cams.
