I agree completely. Indeed what I was most hoping for in Leopard (and most disappointed in not finding) was this sense of "newness" due to making the iTunes appearance universal. Yet we're stuck with the same gumball appearance from 10.0, minus the white windows with grey lines.
However I do like the menu bar. I dislike translucent menus (rather than the menubar) simply because I think the transparency is a tad too high and harder to read.
But I like new appearances and I think there's something to be said for them. However some changes (cough - stacks - cough) clearly are a step backwards in both appearance and utility.
